THANK YOU FOR VISITING THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF
THE NORTH CAROLINA SOCIETY OF HISTORIANS
Since 1941, the North Carolina Society of Historians has presented annual awards of excellence to recognize those individuals and organizations who discover and present information about the history and heritage of North Carolina. By doing this, the society encourages the teaching of state history at all levels. It also encourages historians to research and record or write their findings and present them in unique ways. It inspires others to tour historical sites in the state through recognition of museums and local organizations. The society was established to strengthen historical, genealogical, and preservation societies as well.

Meet Lane Dyer,
Our new “From The Quill” Editor and Communications Director for the North Carolina Society of Historians. A native of Wilkes County, Lane is an engaging journalist and author of books celebrating NC history. In the last two years, he has received seven NCSH awards, including a Lighthouse Award of Exceptional Merit for research that led to the discovery, editing, and preservation of a “long lost” book of otherwise unrecorded history of Wilkes in the 1880’s. In addition to authoring books, since 2022 he has demonstrated his passion for writing and history as a serial journalist for the Wilkes Record. As you get to know Lane through the newsletter, he welcomes your comments.
