DESCRIPTION OF AWARD CATEGORIES

Deadline for submitting entries is June 30.

[1] JOURNALISM AWARD

Publications eligible for the Journalism Award:

.  Historical or biographical newspaper, magazine, and journal articles of exceptional merit that focus on some phase of local, regional, or state history, or the biography of a native North Carolinian.

.  Publications devoted primarily to the dissemination of historical facts, documents, or records containing historic or genealogical information.

.  Publications dealing primarily with association/society meetings and/or general activities of the membership, including projects and social events.

[2] MUSEUM AWARD

Deserving of this Award are Museums housing significant, interesting, and informative displays of historical artifacts and resource materials about the history and heritage of North Carolina, and are offering public educational programs, tours, demonstrations, etc., relative to those exhibits or to other aspects of North Carolina history not on display. Works-in-progress are eligible.

[3] HISTORICAL BOOK AWARD

“Historical Book” denotes broad or topical research on any aspect of North Carolina history, including biography, memoir, genealogy, religious history, and historical fiction.  The writer need not be a resident of North Carolina.  Entries must be in book form and may include the following:

    – History of a North Carolina county, institution, industry/business 

    – Biographies or autobiographies/memoirs of NC individuals 

    – Well-crafted, detailed histories of NC families  

    – Development of religious movements, houses of worship, and/or religious institutions within NC

   –  Significant works of fiction based on actual historical events, places, and/or individuals in NC history

[4] ORGANIZATION AWARD

These awards are presented to local, regional, and state historical, genealogical, or preservation societies, and other organized groups making a significant contribution to the accumulation and preservation of NC history.

[5] PUBLISHERS AWARD

North Carolina publishers who, on a regular basis, give special emphasis to the collection, preservation, and publication of local, regional, or state history.  These may be publishers of newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters, and other publications distributed to the general public.

[6] MULTIMEDIA AWARD

These awards are given to people promoting NC history or heritage through plays; poetry; oral histories;  collections;  media formats, such as video, DVD, PODCAST, Facebook or Blog (minus viewer comments!);  music (CD collections or original compositions);  art – collections or individual works — original paintings, drawings, photography, crafts (such as historic styles of pottery, basketry, etc.;  quilts and tapestries that convey the history and heritage of NC).  Be creative!

[7] STUDENT HISTORIAN AWARD

This Award is OPEN for students in Grades 4 – 12 who submit Projects on any aspect of NC’s History and/or Heritage that NCSH judges deem to be of Exceptional Merit. 

NOTE:  FOR THE STUDENT HISTORIAN AWARD,  ENTRY DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER  30.

SPECIAL AWARDS

These Special Awards are given each year in addition to the prestigious NCSH Award of Excellence

received by all Award winners.  With exception of THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD, selections for the following SPECIAL AWARDS are made by NCSH Officers, based on recommendations from NCSH judges  OR  from a Selection Committee of NCSH Directors appointed by the President.

THE PRESIDENTS AWARD

ONE President’s Award is given each year. Only current-year Award winners whose entry received unanimous approval of their judges can be considered. From those, one is chosen by the current NCSH president for this Special Recognition.

THE LIGHTHOUSE AWARD

This Special Award may be given annually to one or more recipients whose work on behalf of NC’s  history, heritage, genealogy, or preservation represents multiple meritorious achievements  or an innovative or unique presentation deserving of special recognition.

HISTORIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

This award is presented to an individual who is contributing, in some very special manner, to preserving or perpetuating some aspect of North Carolina’s history and/or heritage. This individual may or may not have an entry in the current year’s Awards Program.
